Европейская конвенция о правах человека (подписана в 1950 г. членами Европейского сообщества; ратифицирована Великобританией в 1951 г.; вступила в силу в 1953 г.; провозглашает ряд основополагающих прав и свобод: право на жизнь, запрет пыток, запрет рабства и подневольного труда, право на свободу и личную неприкосновенность, право на справедливое судебное разбирательство, запрет на не установленное законом наказание, право на уважение личной и семейной жизни, право на свободу мысли, совести и религии, право на свободу выражать свое мнение, право на свободу собраний и ассоциаций, право вступать в брак, право на эффективные средства правовой защиты, запрет дискриминации; дополнительные протоколы к конвенции гарантируют дополнительные права; договаривающиеся стороны взяли на себя обязательство обеспечивать все эти права и свободы каждому лицу, находящемуся под их юрисдикцией; в соответствии с конвенцией был создан международный механизм защиты этих прав; в целях обеспечения соблюдения обязательств, принятых на себя государствами-участниками)
